About Our Program
Our calves are kept on their mother's milk for as long as possible before weaning. Besides their mother's milk and occasional natural mineral supplementation, (less than 1% of their total feed intake) all of our cattle are 100% grass-fed, which includes natural grasses, forages, leguminous hay and alfalfa. Our animals will never receive any animal by-products in their feed, nor will they ever be fed grain. Grain is not part of their natural diet and can have adverse health effects on both the animal and the consumer. The grass-fed method of feeding, as compared to other methods used commonly today, is what gives our beef its unique flavor and amazing health benefits.
The cattle we raise, Angus and Angus crossbreds, are well-suited to the local area and tend to have a better carcass grade than many other breeds. Since we raise the majority of our cattle from birth, we know the entire history of each animal from birth to butcher. Infact, most of our mother cows have been named and some are gentle enough to be hand-fed. Our goal is to eventually operate a completely closed herd that will ensure optimal herd health and productivity.
We finish our steers on the best grass available, which optimizes the flavor and tenderness of the beef. They are then processed by Redwood Meat Company in Eureka and/or Johansen's Quality Meats in Orland (both USDA inspected) where the meat is aged for ten to twenty-one days. We carry a variety of cuts and do our best to accomodate special orders.
No Hormones/No Antibiotics
We will never give our cattle any antibiotics that will be processed in our program. If an unhealthy animal requires such care, for humane purposes, we will administer antibiotics and will eliminate that particular animal from our program. We do not use any synthetic growth hormones at any time during the life of our cattle.
Better for the Environment and Better for the Animal
Our cattle operation is environmentally friendly and depends upon careful management of the land, cattle and other natural resources. Good management practices are followed so that our pastures are never overgrazed and plenty of fresh water and feed are available. Occasionally, we must corral our cattle for short periods of time in order to brand, sort, and provide vaccinations. All of this occurs with the least amount of stress as possible to the animal. Otherwise, they are allowed to wander the pastures and hillsides at their leisure.
